Used Diesel Generators Can Cost You Too Much!

Before buying a generator weigh up the drawbacks against the advantages of owning used diesel generators. Secondhand generators can be incredibly expensive, worth up to half a million dollars. These are the big ones used in high use commercial industries. Then there are the used diesel generators for home and leisure time, and for small businesses. Remember to do your research so you know exactly what you need. The principles behind buying large or small used diesel generators are virtually the same.

Here are some important facts for you to consider while buying used diesel generators.

1. Determine its Age and  History

Make sure you find out how old it is. Also find out what it has been used for (primary or secondary power) and, if you can, how many operating hours it has done. Most used diesel generators will have an odometer and this will tell you exactly how many hours, and how hard it has worked throughout its lifetime. When choosing from used generators take into account that one used for emergency power will be in better order and used less than used than one that has been a primary power source. If you can not find out this information check the vendor’s reputation. Also check if it has been rebuilt or tested by the seller.

2. Established Manufacturer

It is much better to buy used diesel generators that have a well known brand name. If ever you need parts or technical advice then it will be much easier to find. Also, would you rather rely on an unknown or cheap brand name for emergency power or a trustworthy manufacturer that has proven their used diesel generators are just as reliable as they are brand-new. Some of the trusted names include Kubota, Cummins, Caterpillar and Detroit. If you reserve your search for used diesel generators among the old hands you can be assured of longevity from a generator that has had regular upkeep.

3. Servicing Background

Many used diesel generators come from sales and foreclosures so it is difficult to check their history. Checking the background of used diesel generators will help you decide which one offers the best value for money over the long-term. This can be a downfall of looking at used diesel generators. You will have to make a judgement call or have someone check it before buying a used diesel generator. But, if you can, always look at the servicing records the seller has to backup what you are being told.

4. Inspect its General Condition

Take a good look at the machine for sale. This should be the number one action a purchaser takes. Look for visible signs of wear. For oil leaks. Cracks. Does everything look all right? You can see if it has been looked after throughout its life.

5. Make Sure it Operates Safely

Check all used diesel generators operate. Check for noise levels, fuel emissions, and for vibration levels. If the vendor does not offer to start it up, take the initiative and ask. Look at how efficiently it produces power, and the quality of its output.

When considering the options among the used diesel generators for sale, keep in mind there is unlikely to be any  sort of warranty. While you can ask for a written agreement, especially if buying a commercial size unit, consider what would be fair  Do your homework. I am totally against buying second-hand stuff. When you get a new item you surely have a better chance to see it working for quite a while if not for years. Think of washing machines! A diesel generator is no different. A new one may cost more but it is definitely a smart choice. Why waste time digging into its history and doing lots of tests? You may need to get it fixed soon …
