Now, each YDG is build by Yanmar. But, there’s a whole range of diesel generators that use Yanmar diesel engines in their generator sets; for example: NORPRO, Diesel America, to name a few. This is another testimony to the outstanding quality of their diesel engines.
YDG come in three versions: YDG2700, YDG3700 and YDG5500, with the corresponding continuous AC output 2.5kW, 3.5kW and 5.5kW respectively. Their operational speed is 3600 RPM for a  60Hz output. They are built as revolving field type 2 pole generators, which means low maintenance costs due to the simplicity of construction. They all have air cooled diesel engines and a number of very useful features:

• large fuel tank for an extended run time,
• electric start with recoil back-up,
• automatic shut down for low oil pressure situation.

These Yanmar diesel generators are remarkably easy to move, with the units weighing between 139 and 238 lb. Although these generators are all portable (built as a roll cage) a set of wheels
can be added for extra mobility.

Although Yanmar diesel generators’ prices are higher than their competitors (YDG3700 is offered for between $2,500 and $2,999 by most dealers) their outstanding operational parameters, coupled with low maintenance costs and good resale value, makes them a definite emergency power source for American homeowners and business operators. Rather than buying a cheap, imported diesel generator, consider investing in one, that will give you an outstanding and dependable service for the years to come.

Now, where do you start with choosing a portable diesel generator that is most suitable for your individual needs?
Doing some basic search online is a must; this will familiarize you with some basic concepts about emergency and a back-up power generation.
Knowing the technical terminology will enable you to understand what the portable diesel generators dealers are talking about, and their pricing and quotes given to you. You should also visit online shops and manufacturers’ websites. Be careful of the so-called “review sites” as they don’t offer an unbiased opinion, but are nothing more than affiliates and resellers, paid a commission by the vendors.

Portable diesel generators made by Yanmar, Honda, Briggs, Cummins and other American manufacturers are in general, of a better quality than those made overseas (mainly China) and imported to the US by chain stores and individual dealers. As usually, you get what you pay – lower end generator sets are driven by the very basic diesel engines, characterized by a high noise level, excessive wear and tear and a short period of use, with main breakdowns occurring as soon as 30-40 hrs. of use. Of course, you’ll pay about 30-45% less than for one of the brand name portable diesel generators made in the US. Ultimately, if you experience frequent power breakdowns, and having the electricity on at all times is of a critical importance to running your home or your business, invest in a high quality genset unit.

Typical home will be adequately supplied by a 6000 Watts power unit. Buying a portable diesel generator of this output for about $1100 (cheaper versions) shouldn’t be a problem. If a higher reliability is required, try Honda or Yanmar diesel generators, for about $2000. One more important thing: the maintenance costs are much higher for the cheaper units.
One very important consideration: make sure that your portable diesel generator has been tested to applicable ANSI, UL and CSA standards. Additionally, it should be certified by the ETL to meet Canadian and American electrical codes, to ensure the maximum operating safety.

So, how can you make yourself less depandent of the less-than-perfect technology? Beginning with the emergency power supply for your home or business, should be the first step.
Consider installing an electric generator that will be able to provide all your basic power demand: heating, lighting, radio, refrigeration and the running of any health appliances you may need.
Having a dependable, low maintenance diesel generator to supply back-up power for your household in cause of a blackout is highly recommended. Although, you’ll have to pay about 40% for a reputable brand diesel generator than for the petrol version, consider it an investment in your peace of mind. Buying a 2.5 kW Honda diesel generator will cost you around $2,200 but in return, you’ll have an emergency power right at a flick of a switch, for many years to come.

Diesel power generators are my favorites for the following reasons:

1. low maintenance,
2. high reliability,
3. ability to withstand overloading,
4. high resale value.

With virtually no negatives, apart from a higher price, the popularity of diesel generators, both: portable and stationary, is increasing. Even if the flu epidemic doesn’t eventuate, there are other threats to your uninterrupted electricity supply: severe winters, power grid maintenance, etc. And, the hurricane season is just around the corner. Get ready!

Now, here’s what I found: diesel generators can be bought cheaply on ebay. Yes, you may have heard that one. But, did you know, that you can even negotiate delayed payments? And they often offer a free shipment. Just recently, there was a Generac Diesel Generator, 35kW and with only 100 hrs of use. It was offered with a huge base tank (135 gallon) and had the transfer switch rated at 100 A. Made in 2002, it seemed to be a tad too old. But, even at the “Buy now” option $6,500 it was a good deal. Expect to pay more than $12,500 for a new unit. Concluding, it makes sense to check all the latest deals on ebay, before spending your hard earned dollars…

Anyway, I need diesel generator to provide my home workshop and garage with emergency power. And while I’m a handyman of some skills, I don’t want to spend too much time doing maintenance, or repair works on the generator that I use very rarely - blackouts only.

So, if somebody has any experience with Kipor diesel generators, between 4 and 7kW, I’d apprecite an honest opinion. I want to educate myself, before spending money on something, that I can hardly afford, but must have.

You won’t find many reconditioned used diesel generators, below 20 kW power – clearly a size that’s just too big for the average home. But, if you’re buying for your business, it makes a perfect sense, spending around $15,000 for the set. They also have a much better safety gear and servicing them is easy.

In any event, try to stay away from those cheap “throw away” used diesel generators. They are also known as portable units. Their main weakness is the high speed of rotation – 3600 RPM, twice the speed of a standard diesel generator. They have a half of the cooper wiring and are usually capacitor-regulated. This makes them prone to defects and their wear is much greater than the diesel generators operating at 1800 RPM speeds.

In any event, try shopping at your local diesel generators reconditioning business, or a reputable dealer. Stay away from private sales, unless you know the workings and are able to diagnose any possible problems. Ultimately, you may hire a diesel generator specialist mechanic when you go shopping. It will save lots of money and frustration…

• Transfer switch must be installed by a qualified electrician, to protect the power grid and ensure safety of all working.
• Proper wattage calculations must be done prior to installing the unit, so no overloading is possible.
• Diesel generator must be located in a dry, well ventilated area. You must not touch generator’s metal parts when standing on a wet floor, or bare footed.
• Nominal load must not be exceeded.
• Extension cords and wiring must of able to carry the maximum load produced by diesel benerator unit. They must not be damaged, and you should ensure that a periodical inspections are carried out by licensed safety worker.

With diesel generators, both portable and stationary, gaining in popularity, it’s very important that their users make sufficient effort to learn those basic safety precautions listed above, and implement any specific requirements, as directed by the manufacturer. This will ensure a safe and trouble free operation and result in delivering emergency power when needed.
